  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish with melted butter.
  2. In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts, sugar, and cinnamon for the filling. Set aside.
  3. Carefully unroll the phyllo dough and cover it with a damp kitchen towel to prevent drying out.
  4. Place one sheet of phyllo dough into the prepared dish and brush it lightly with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering about 8-10 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each layer with butter.
  5. Sprinkle a portion of the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo layers.
  6. Repeat the layering process with phyllo dough and melted butter until you run out of nut mixture. Make sure to save some phyllo sheets for the top.
  7. For the top layer, use about 8-10 sheets of phyllo, brushing each layer with butter.
  8. Before baking, use a sharp knife to cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, lemon juice, and the optional cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10-15 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  11. Once the baklava is out of the oven, immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the hot baklava.
  12. Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. This will allow the syrup to be absorbed, giving the baklava its sweet and sticky texture.
